In October Art + Australia will host members of Etan Creative Vision Art Studio (Paiwan Ravar tribe, Taiwan) in Naarm/Melbourne who will share their music and cultural practices throughout the city. Through a residency, performances and workshop, Etan Pavavalung, Sakuliu Mananigai, Zaletj Rupunayan, Dremedreman Talumiling, Sutipau Tjaruzaljum, and Sedjam Mananigai, will engage audiences with the distinct lalingedan (double-pipe nose and mouth bamboo flutes) and the pakulalu (single pipe mouth flute).
The events hosted by Art + Australia extend 'The Sound' a chapter of 'Translating the Art and Australia Landscape' a project edited by Chloe Ho for the A+A Study Centre.

In this free one hour concert, members of Etan Creative Vision Art Studio will share traditional village songs and perform with their unique double barrel nose and mouth flute.
This performance by Etan Creative Vision Art Studio includes all Paiwan Ravar tribe Successors of the double barrel nose and mouth flutes: Etan Pavavalung, Sakuliu Mananigai, and Zaletj Rupunayan. They were trained by National Treasure Pairang Pavavaljung (1935-2023) before he passed away. The performance also includes Dremedreman Talumiling and Sutipau Tjaruzaljum, Pairang's final students, and songwoman Sedjam Mananigai. Together, they will be performing Paiwan nursery rhymes, ancient tunes, and the Paiwan flutes.
They hope to share a music experience with Australian audiences, and to demonstrate Taiwan's Indigenous language, culture and music through performance.

Members of Etan Creative Vision Art Studio from Taiwan’s Paiwan tribe will meet Naarm-based artist Jen Valender at MPavilion to harmonise their instruments to the wind. This live performance will include Indigenous songs from Taiwan accompanied by the Aeolian harp, the lalingedan double-pipe nose and mouth bamboo flutes, and the pakulalu single pipe mouth flute, and feature traditional costume from Paiwan.
Through harmonising their respective instruments, musicians will be looking to find what Naarm may sound like.

This documentary exhibition narrates the art, music, and culture from the Paiwan Ravar Tribe (Indigenous Taiwan) and will be on view at the Wilin Student Centre 7-14 October. It will include notes and diary entries about the Paiwan flutes, an exhibition of half-made flutes, photographs, and documentary interviews with the late Elder Pairang Pavavalung (1935-2023).
