Informed by Zico Albaiquni’s ongoing research of the Indonesian term lukisan and Sanento Yuliman's 1983 article “Tradisi Lukis: Lukis dalam pengertian sediakala (The lukis tradition in Indonesia: Defining the historical act of painting)”, we contend that the words painting and lukisan are not exchangeable. For Zico and Sanento, lukisan points toward ideas that include, but are not limited to, the English word 'painting'.

The performance was followed by a conversation with Zico's editor and translator Jason Anselmo, painting conservator Eliza O’Donnell, and art historian Chloe Ho in an open discussion with the audience on what it means to think beyond the anglophone and material world of painting.
